After an eight-year absence, Anglo-Hungarian pianist Sir András Schiff returns to the Conservatorio di Torino, who made his debut at Unione Musicale in 1994.
A refined and virtuosic artist, conductor, educator, and founder of several festivals, Schiff is among the leading musical personalities of our time and one of the foremost interpreters of Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. Although he is a reserved figure and distant from the mechanisms of the “star system,” he has repeatedly spoken out in defense of civil rights and freedom of expression, even receiving threats from Hungarian nationalist factions, which led him to decide against performing more in his country of origin.
In 2013, he received the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society of London for his outstanding musical work, and in 2014, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to music. Schiff is more than a virtuoso; he is a philosopher of the keyboard, who delves deeply into sound and structure, mastering both grand forms and fragments with equal expertise.
At Unione Musicale, he presents a “surprise” recital during which he will introduce the pieces on the program.
