Two extraordinary international artists meet at a single keyboard: Elisabeth Leonskaja and Julius Drake, towering figures of the pianistic world over recent decades, join forces for a concert far out of the ordinary, dedicated to the most intimate and visionary of Schubert’s works for piano four hands. Born in a domestic setting — for the celebrated Schubertiads — yet driven by an ambition that is almost symphonic, this repertoire transforms the piano into a shared space in which breath, physical presence and phrasing must blend with an almost choreographic precision.
To play four hands is to share the limelight and to build a single sonic landscape out of two distinct individualities: an exercise in trust, in deep listening, and in physical attunement that finds its ultimate expression in a profound expressive affinity.
The programme brings together three masterworks from Schubert’s final years: the tempestuous and dramatic Lebensstürme; the Fantasia D. 940, near-orchestral in conception and free and visionary in its architecture; and the monumental Grand Duo D. 812, a vast fresco of symphonic proportions.
An evening of intense musical poetry. Do not miss it!
