Four of the most extraordinary soloists of their generation come together for an evening of chamber music of rare intensity. The violinist Hyeyoon Park, the violinst Timothy Ridout, Kian Soltani on cello and the pianist Benjamin Grosvenor share not only an uncommon virtuosity, but also that artistic rapport which transforms the ensemble into something greater than the sum of its parts: a single musical organism, animated by a collective breath and an energy that knows no faltering. “There is no leader among them, but four musicians — and four friends — who listen to, breathe with, and shape the music together” (Christopher Axworthy).
The programme brings together two masterpieces of nineteenth-century chamber music: Dvořák’s celebrated Quartet op. 87 and Sergei Taneyev’s Quartet op. 20 — a rarely heard work of rich counterpoint and deep lyricism by a composer (Tchaikovsky’s most cherished pupil, and teacher of both Scriabin and Rachmaninov) who has been unjustly relegated to the margins of the great repertoire.
